1895 – Construction of Mullaperiyar Dam
1899 – Formation of Periyar Lake Reserve
1933 - S. C. H. Robinson appointed first game warden
1934 - Formation of Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary
1950 - Consolidation as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
1978 - Declaration as Periyar Tiger Reserve
1982 - Preliminary notification of the core area as National Park
1991 - Project Elephant launched
1996 - India Eco-development Project launched
2001 - Recognised as two divisions

Periyar – literally means big river.
Thekkady – means the place with plenty of Teak wood Tree
Kumaly – Years ago this place used to be a marshy area, and
the bubbles in the
Marsh gave the place its name. Kumila in Malayalam means bubbles.
Kuttikknam – means a small forest
Munnar – means three rivers
